President Robert Mugabe yesterday left for Malawi for the burial of his ally, the late Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika.

Wa Mutharika died of heart attack in a South African hospital two weeks ago. He was 78. Mugabe was accompanied by the First Lady Grace Mugabe, Foreign Affairs minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi and other senior government officials.

Mugabe will be among several heads of state and government who include South African President Jacob Zuma, Tanzanias Jakaya Kikwete, Mozambiques Armando Guebuza, Benins Thomas Yayi Boni, Kenyas Mwai Kibaki and Namibian President Hipikepunye Pohamba.

Angola will be represented by its Speaker of the National Assembly Antonio Paulo Kasoma while China will be represented by a yet-to-be-named Cabinet minister.

Wa Mutharika will be buried at his sprawling Ndata Farm in the southern tea-growing district of Thyolo. International news cable networks said Malawi had declared today a national holiday to give Malawians an opportunity to attend the burial.
