CHINHOYI A 23-year-old mbanje peddler, Hitler Jingura, recently stunned the court when he claimed he used the drug to scare away spooks.

Jingura made the remarks following his conviction for possession of 175 grammes of dagga.

In mitigation, Jingura told the court that he used the mbanje to scare away evil spirits that were tormenting his family.

I used the dagga to scare away spooks from my house, Jingura said.

He was slapped with a nine-month prison term when he appeared before magistrate Jele Singandu last week.

The court however suspended four months of the sentence on condition of good behaviour and the remainder on condition he performed 175 hours of community service at the Chinhoyi Magistrates Court starting today.

Prosecutor Clarence Majongosi told the court that on April 17, detectives received information that Jingura was selling dagga at his house, in Gadzema high-density suburbs.

The detectives raided the house and recovered 29 sachets of the illicit drug.
