The Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture, Stephen Mahere, has disclosed that his ministry was still awaiting Cabinet approval of plans to renovate all government schools by 2015.

Mahere made the remarks while addressing members of the Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (Zimta) in Bulawayo over the weekend.

He said they had submitted a strategic plan aimed at renovating all government schools by 2015. “The renovation of government-assisted schools is pegged at number three in the plan submitted to Cabinet,” Mahere said.

“It has been included in order to restore the conditions of learning so that the learning environment is conducive. We want to restore the glory of all government schools.”

Mahere said teachers were also a major priority and were pegged on the top of the list.

“The ministry is lobbying for remuneration for teachers as part of the strategic plan,” he said.

“The restoration of teachers’ professional system in the country in terms of providing high quality opportunities for the teaching cadre has been made a priority.”

He said other provisions in the plan included the establishment of a renewed and integrated curriculum for primary and secondary schools, focusing resources on the orphaned and vulnerable children as well as the elderly who are illiterate.

“We are simply waiting for cabinet to endorse this plan so that we can implement it,” Mahere said.
