Alpha Media Holdings Group Associate Editor Brian Mangwende was yesterday elected chairman of the Zimbabwe National Editors’ Forum (Zinef).

Mangwende takes over from Iden Wetherell, Group Senior Associate Editor of the same media stable, who did not seek re-election.

Other office-bearers elected at Zinef’s annual general meeting are Financial Gazette Assistant Editor Njabulo Ncube who will deputise Mangwende while Mail Editor Barnabas Thondhlana takes over as secretary-general.

Oliver Gawe, Editor of Business Week, came in as treasurer with Daily News Editor Stanley Gama becoming committee member.

Mangwende pledged to work tirelessly to ensure professionalism prevails in Zimbabwean journalism. “As a new council of the forum, we will uphold standards of professionalism and facilitate exchange of ideas among editors,” he said.

“We will also strive to defend and promote media freedom through all possible mediums and provide a unified voice on issues of concern to editors and offer solidarity when the rights of editors are infringed.”

In its congratulatory message to the new committee, the Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) pledged to support Zinef in its endeavours.

“VMCZ will continue to work with Zinef in its role to protect editors against victimisation for carrying out their duty and will further urge the editors to uphold their commitment to speak with one voice in challenging repressive Press laws, victimisation from any entities, arrests and other forms of pressure that threaten the viability of the profession and media houses,” read the statement.
