The High Court yesterday indefinitely reserved ruling into the bail application by 29 MDC-T activists accused of killing a senior Harare policeman, Inspector Petros Mutedza.

The party activists had, through their lawyer Charles Kwaramba, applied to High Court judge Justice Chinembiri Bhunu seeking the right to appeal for bail at the Supreme Court.

Justice Bhunu denied them bail after they were indicted for trial, but the trial failed to kick off and as a result the accused are still to file defence outline papers.

Kwaramba yesterday submitted that the ruling made last week that the accused should first make pleas and file defence outline papers before their application for bail could be made was out of order as the court was following an extraneous and irrelevant matter to guide it in denying his clients bail.

The accused are Solomon Madzore (MDC-T Youth Assembly chairperson), Last Maengahama (national executive committee member), councillor Oddrey Sydney Chirombe (Ward 33), Budiriro councillor Tungamirai Madzokere (Ward 32), Cynthia Manjoro, Lloyd Chitanda, Stanford Mangwiro, Tendai Chinyama, Jefias Moyo, Abina Rutsito, Gabriel Shumba, Stephen Takaedzwa, Linda Madyamhanje, Tafadzwa Billiard, Simon Mudimu, Dube Zwelibanzi, Simon Mapanzure, Augustine Tengenyika and GaparaNyamadzawo, Paul Rukanda, Lazarus and Stanford Maengahama, Kerina Dewa and Memory Ncube, Rebecca Mafukeni, Yvonne Musarurwa, Phineas Nhatarikwa and Stanford Mangwiro.

Some of the accused have been in remand prison for more than a year. The MDC-T denies its activists were involved in the murder of Mutedza, saying the cop was assaulted by patrons following a beer brawl at a Glen View bar in May last year.
