Popular disc jockey Joshua Ali Tom, popularly known as DJ Smallz, has ditched Apama Dance Group after going for three months without being paid.

The turntable expert, who was responsible for selecting songs for the theatrical group during performances, said he was disgruntled after leader of the outfit, David “Apama” Machowa, failed to honour his salary pledge for the past three months.

However, DJ Smallz said he was a relieved man after getting slots at Red Fox and Sports Diner International as a dancehall disc jockey.

“I left Apama Dance Group after the guys failed to pay me for a couple of months. Fortunately, I was engaged as one of the Red Fox DJs,” said DJ Smallz.

“I spin the wheels at the club every Saturday at an event dubbed ‘Slick Saturdays’ while on Sundays I go to Sports Diner for the ‘Reggae Nights’ event. “It was easy for me to find another job because I was a DJ a long time before joining Apama. I worked with groups like Silverstone, Mothersound and Badman Crew, which employed me for four years.

“Things are going well for me these days as many Zimbabweans are fast beginning to appreciate dancehall music. It’s good that I am doing what I know best in front of big crowds like those that usually throng Red Fox and Sports Diner” he said.

Apama confirmed DJ Smallz’s departure, but refused to talk about the reason behind the move. “It’s true DJ Smallz is no longer with the group, but I can’t say more,” said Apama.

DJ Smallz made headlines when he became a DJ at a very tender age.

He said he was taught to spin the wheels by his uncle Mohammed Ali, who at the time was plying his trade as a disc jockey in Saudi Arabia.
