Thirty-six people had died in road traffic accidents by the close of the Easter holidays yesterday, police said.

The latest accident occurred yesterday afternoon when three people died while 18 others were injured after a commuter omnibus they were travelling in veered off the road and overturned at the two-kilometre peg along the Mvurwi-Centenary Road.

Mashonaland Central police spokesperson Inspector Memory Pamire confirmed the incident, adding the injured were admitted at Concession Hospital.

“We are still to verify the identities of the deceased,” she said.

Earlier on, Police General Headquarters officer-in-charge of public relations Inspector Blessmore Chishaka said they had recorded 246 accidents countrywide, which he said was an improvement from the 255 accidents recorded over the same period last year.

Before the Mazowe accident, the number of injured passengers stood at 237.

Police attributed most of the accidents to speeding, overtaking errors, drunken driving, misjudgment and use of defective vehicles.

Police said they impounded 510 vehicles for various traffic offences and issued 13 815 tickets for various offences over the holidays.
