Monomotapa coach Taurai Mangwiro believes a solid start to the Castle Premier Soccer League season will help them fight for honours this season.

The 2009 champions started the new season on a high, coming from a goal down against Premiership returnees Buffaloes to win the match 3-1.

Tomorrow, Monoz will come face to face with league debutants Harare City at Rufaro Stadium and Mangwiro has called on his boys to show the same character they exhibited in Mutare last week.

“It’s still early days to talk about the championship, but it is these games that will count the most at the end of the season. Anything that you do at the start will define how you will perform in the rest of the season,” said Mangwiro.

Monoz’s opponents Harare City could be new to the Premiership environment but after their season opener away to Motor Action last Sunday, they proved they are no push-overs.

The City Fathers restricted the former league champions to a goalless draw.

“I watched their match against Motor Action, they are not a bad side. They are good at defending and also very exciting going forward. We will have to be at our best to win the match,” said Mangwiro.

With the leading two teams occupied with continental football or affected by this, a win for the third-placed Monoz will see them assuming the top post on the log standings. Leaders Highlanders’ match against FC Platinum has been postponed as the Zvishavane side are in Sudan for a Caf Champions League match.

Second–placed Dynamos play host to Liga Muçulmana on Sunday in the same competition, giving a chance to Monoz to take an early initiative in the league title race. Elsewhere, former league champions Gunners and Motor Action will square off at Lafarge Stadium looking to bring back past glory.
