A Kwekwe journalist with the Midlands Observer had his leg amputated on Sunday following an accident at his home in Mbizo.

Forty-two-year-old Howard Masaninga was hit by a car while basking in the sun outside his house on April 1.

The driver of the car, Silas Chitowa, who was not licensed to drive, has since pleaded guilty to charges of negligent driving and driving without a licence. He lost control of the vehicle, a Mazda B1600 which he had taken from the family home without his fathers permission.

He rammed through Masaningas gate before hitting him. Chitowa then attempted to flee, but was apprehended about kilometre away from Masaningas house after he rammed into a street light.

Doctors at Kwekwe General Hospital had to amputate Masaningas lower right leg because it could not be saved.

Speaking from his hospital bed yesterday, Masaninga thanked God that he had survived.

I am recovering well although at night the pain is unbearable. Doctors say I will have to stay in hospital a bit longer so that I can go through physiotherapy, said Masaninga.

Meanwhile, Chitowa, who pleaded guilty before magistrate Taurai Manwere was remanded in custody to April 12 for sentence.
