KWEKWE Former Rusape town clerk Moses Chiraya was last week jailed for an effective three months for failing to pay maintenance to his estranged wife.

Chiraya, who was last year ordered by a Kwekwe magistrate to pay $660 per month to Maria Nyarai Chiraya for the upkeep of their two minor children, failed to comply with the court order resulting in arrears accumulating to $4 470.

Appearing before Kwekwe provincial magistrate Taurai Manwere, Chiraya pleaded guilty to the charge, but told the court he was failing to comply with the directive because all his earnings would go towards the maintenance cost.

He was sentenced to six months in prison, of which three months were suspended on condition he paid the outstanding support money by April 30.

Manwere ordered that Chiraya pays a once-off payment of $3 000 to ensure that his children get food and clothing before settling the difference by end of April.

His appeal to escape jail failed after the prosecution disclosed he had previously been convicted for the same offence.

Chiraya had a wholly suspended sentence of three months imposed on him by the same court on June 30 last year after he had failed to pay $1 300.
