Police have launched a blitz against unroadworthy vehicles, overloading transporters and those without proper documentation in an effort to ensure safety on the roads during the Easter holiday.

Deputy officer commanding traffic Assistant Commissioner Kenny Mthombeni said the operation, code-named Safe Easter Holiday, would see an increase in the number of roadblocks across the country.

“We are going to saturate roadblocks during this Easter holiday as we are trying to curb road carnage.

“The public should change the mindset over police as we are trying to protect them. If anything, accidents have declined since our blitz on the country’s roads started and we will continue until road carnage has been dealt with,” Mthombeni added.

He said the blitz was targeting overloading and unregistered transporters plying the country’s roads, among others. “All we want is to have a safe Easter holiday,” he said.

Public holidays have in recent years been bloody as many lives have been lost in road carnage.
