Gwanda mayor Lionel DeNecker says his council will today present a report of its findings into alleged corruption charges levelled against the local authority’s municipal police.

DeNecker also disclosed that one of the four suspended treasury department workers alleged to have fled the country when the probe was launched had returned.

“The investigations are complete and the report has been compiled.

“However, details of its findings will be given tomorrow (Wednesday),” he said.

“One of the officials that was reported to have left the country when the investigation was being carried out has returned and is dealing with the police at the moment.”

DeNecker said two officials implicated in the scam would be taken to court.

“They are waiting to be taken to court over the allegations of fraud, but investigations on the whereabouts of the other officials that are rumoured to be in South Africa are still underway.

“I cannot confirm when we will be taking them to court because no specific date has been set,” he said.

Gwanda Municipality recently instituted a probe into alleged irregularities within its treasury department and suspended five workers fingered in the scam.
