One of the two men arrested alongside a Zimbabwe Prison Services boss, Assistant Commissioner Apinos Mudzamiri, over illegal possession of elephant tusks has been slapped with an effective three-month jail term.

Innocent Nyakuswa was convicted on his plea of guilty to contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act when he appeared before Hwange resident magistrate Collet Ncube last week.

Nyakuswa and his alleged accomplices, Mudzamiri and Tinotenda Mapanga, were arrested in Binga on March 9 after they were found in possession of four elephant tusks and an unspecified quantity of marijuana.

Mudzamiri and Mapanga denied the charge and are now set to face trial on Thursday.

They were remanded in custody at Hwange Prison after Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Martin Makonese turned down their bail application.

The three were arrested after their vehicle got stuck along a muddy path used by police anti-poaching patrol teams in Matabeleland North Province.
