The Zimbabwe National Amateur Boxing Association (ZABA) has selected four boxers to represent the country in the London Olympic qualifiers in Morocco from April 27 to May 6.

The United Kingdom-based boxers are Kudzanai Huni, Silvari Ndlovu and Simbarashe Mhondiwa while female boxer Fortunate Chidzivo is the only locally-based boxer in the team.

ZABA technical director and Bulawayo Province chairman Petros Masiyambumbi confirmed to NewsDay Sport that the boxers will participate in the qualifiers.

We have selected the three boxers because they said they have the resources to go to Morocco and we also have their track records which are very impressive. Chidzivo is an outstanding boxer in the female category that is why we chose her, he said.

Chidzivo will be sponsored by Sports Adventure and Tavenhave and Machingauta Partners. We also have good boxers in the country but the association does not have the funds to send them to the qualifiers. We are confident that the selected boxers will perform well, he said.

Meanwhile, the Bulawayo Amateur Boxing Association held its first tournament of the year at Manor Hotel in Bulawayo which saw 89 boxers taking part.

It was a good outing for the Masiyambumbi brothers, Samson and Arnold as they won their respective fights.

First in the ring was Samson who proved to be too strong for Phillip Mupunde of Hwange and was eventually declared the winner after the referee stopped the fly-weight contest.

Arnold from Nketa outclassed Aaron Sahumani from Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) to win on points in a lightweight bout.

In a pin-weight contest Ndodana Ncube of Hwange beat Justice Nyoni, Milton Moyo of Lobengula outclassed Beaven Nyamhondwa of ZNA on a split- points decision in a catch weight contest while John Chaora of ZNA was the winner of the bantamweight contest against Everson Siziba of Nkulumane on a split-points decision.

In the only female bout on the day, Sizalobuhle Mdlawuzo of HQ One Brigade beat rival Rosemary Mukwenha of ZNA on points in a welterweight bout.
