Top Zimbabwean triathlete Chris Felgate produced an impressive performance to win a bronze medal at the African Triathlon Championships in Le Morne, Mauritius, on Saturday.

The third place overall finish saw Felgate return to the top of the Olympic qualifying standings for Africa as his arch rival Mhedi Elsadiq from Morocco crumbled under the weight of a devastating performance from Felgate, and failed to finish.

Felgate exited the swim in the second group, as Elsadiq and three top SA athletes tore onto the bike course ahead. But Felgate, Wikus Webber and Richard Murray (both from South Africa) worked tirelessly to chase back towards the front of the race.

As the athletes began the 10km run, Murray and his other compatriot Erhard Wolfhardt had a good gap on Felgate who had Elsadiq and the SA trio for company.

However, none could stand up to the powerful display as Felgate tore away and began chasing down Wolfhardt who only just survived to claim the Silver.

Murray won the Gold medal, and with it automatic qualification into the 2012 Olympic Games.

Zimbabwe dominated the event, winning six medals in total, including Three Gold, One Silver and two Bronze.

Laurelle Brown destroyed the Under-19 ladies section by nearly three minutes en-route to her second consecutive title.

Skye Davidson too seemed to win easily from her two compatriots Serena Rendell (Silver) and Helen Mitchell (Bronze) as Zimbabwe again dominated the U15 Ladies.

Drew Williams completed the rout with a hard-fought Under-15 boys title by finishing strongest against a determined challenge from Mauritius
