MASVINGO — State-of-the-art welding equipment worth $100 000 donated by the Indian government to youths in Masvingo Province three years ago is reportedly lying idle in Harare due to bureaucracy, the provincial development committee heard yesterday.

Munyaradzi Rubaya, chairperson of the provincial sub-committee on industry, commerce, mining and tourism, said the province had failed to benefit from the equipment, earmarked for Gutu district, because of government red tape.

“The government of India donated welding machines worth $100 000 for Gutu district, but it has been lying idle for three years in Harare,” said Rubaya. “We want the machines to benefit small-to-medium enterprises.

Masvingo district administrator James Mazvidza who was chairing the meeting said: “It is very saddening to note that the equipment has gone unused for three years yet we want entrepreneurship.”

The country should benefit from such a donation.”
