Chitungwiza General Hospital is undergoing a major facelift to accommodate the towns growing population, chief executive officer Obediah Moyo has revealed.
Moyo made the remarks during a donation of linen and cutlery by African Sun group last week.
He said renovations were expected to cost more than $3 million and increase the mortuarys carrying capacity from the current 30 to 64 bodies.
We have increased the carrying capacity of the mortuary which will see us housing more bodies. The one which was there is old fashioned and now we have built a modern one where one compartment carries four bodies, Moyo said.
Among other major improvements, the hospital is expanding its X-ray and radiology departments with the addition of a computed tomography scan and a magnetic resonance imaging machine.
With the massive population workload which we have, we need accommodation for our doctors and nurses, hence we are also in the process of building 16 units of flats, said Moyo.
The nursing school accommodation is also being extended with addition of 80 more units.
The 1 000 pieces which have been donated are quite substantial and have come at the right time when we were also low on linen. It is the perfect timing, we dont have to go out on tender now, Moyo said.
