Russel Tawadya (28) of Epworth allegedly torched his house with petrol after catching his wife, Amanda Nyama, with a boyfriend.

Nyama was lucky to escape alive after sustaining serious burns and is reported to be recovering at Parirenyatwa Hospital where she was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Her sister and the alleged boyfriend are reported to have sustained injuries, but were treated and discharged.

Tawadya, who spent over two months on the run, was arrested by police on Sunday last week.

On Wednesday, Tawadya was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Donald Ndirowei, facing an attempted murder charge.

He was remanded in custody to April 5 and was advised to apply for bail at the High Court after prosecutor David Magwegwe opposed bail.

Allegations against Tawadya are that on the day in question, he got home and found his wife in the company of a suspected boyfriend whose name was not disclosed in court papers.

The two suspected lovebirds were allegedly enjoying quality time though not in a compromising position as Nyama’s sister was in the room. It is alleged when Tawadya entered the house, he started assaulting his wife and the boyfriend.

However, Tawadya was eventually pushed out of the house by his wife who then locked herself, her sister and the boyfriend inside.

It is alleged Tawadya was then angered by his wife’s action and sourced two litres of petrol which he sprinkled on the door and roof before torching the house.

During the inferno, Nyama is said to have sustained severe burns and was rushed to hospital where she is still admitted.

After allegedly committing the arson, Tawadya was on the run since Christmas last year until last week when the police net closed in on him.
