Seven people died and 44 others were injured when a Botswana-registered bus they were travelling in overturned in Mbembesi on Thursday night after the driver lost control while trying to overtake two other buses.

Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Siphiwe Makonese yesterday said six people, two males and four females — died on the spot while the third victim died on admission at the United Bulawayo Hospitals.

The accident happened at the 102 kilometre peg along the Bulawayo-Gweru road.

“While trying to overtake the two buses, the driver of the bus lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road to the right before rolling several times and landing on its side. Six passengers sustained serious injuries and died on the spot. They were pronounced dead on the scene by a police doctor and another died upon admission at the UBH. The other 44 also sustained injuries and were taken to UBH and Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo,” said Makonese.

She said the names of the deceased could not be immediately released as their next of kin were yet to be informed.
