Anjin strike continues

The strike at one of the Chinese-owned diamond mining firms, Anjin Investments in Chiadzwa, spilled into its second day yesterday with the estimated
1 300 workers vowing not to return to work until their concerns are addressed.

A workers committee member at the mine who refused to be identified said: We are being abused here by these people.

They are really bad employers as you can imagine that we are getting between $188 and $266 as monthly pay yet at other mines workers are getting a minimum basic salary of $600.

He added: We are supposed to get 10% of our basic salaries as night allowances for the services we are forced to do outside our duties in the night.

The Chinese managers randomly beat up people at work for no reason. We just want to be treated fairly because after all the diamonds are ours as Zimbabweans.

Repeated efforts to get comment from Anjin managing director Munyaradzi Machacha were unsuccessful as his mobile phone went unanswered.

Chinese trade attach Rosalind Xue could also not be reached as she was said to be attending to other business in Victoria Falls.
