The Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Tennis Board (BMPTB) will next month host two major tournaments, the Bulawayo Open and the Tarryn-Leigh De Souza Memorial Tennis Tournament.

Board chairman Adam Joelson yesterday said both competitions were expected to attract tennis players from Botswana.

The Bulawayo Open will be held from the April 13-15 while the De Souza memorial will be held from April 16-18.

“We have already started preparations for the two tournaments as a board. They are the first competitions in our 2012 calendar. Although I don’t have names for now, I can safely confirm we have players from Gaborone and Francistown, who will be featuring in both tournaments.

“We have also had confirmation from Harare, Mutare and Gweru. We are expecting a huge turnout this year in both competitions and really looking forward to hosting both. I think it will be good for us as a board, hosting both tournaments consecutively,” Joelson said.

Joelson said the board will take care of prizes for the Bulawayo Open while the De Souza family will cater for the prizes for the annual tournament which honours the late Tarryn-Leigh.

The tournaments cater for both boys and girls from Under-10 to the Under-18.

The venues for the competitions will be the Bulawayo Athletic Club, Girls College, the Bulawayo Country Club with Christian Brothers College with Petra yet to confirm.

Tarryn-Leigh was a student at Girls’ College and she passed away in 2009 after succumbing to heart failure at the age of 24 and the BMPTB runs the memorial tournament in her honour with the De Souza family.
