Teachers should be well equipped on issues to do with information, communication technology (ICT) for them to ably guide students in schools, a Cabinet minister has said.

ICT minister Nelson Chamisa said his ministry was targeting to have every individual online by 2015 to ensure smooth flow of doing business and would embark on erecting one-stop shops in the rural areas for the benefit of students.

Speaking at the ICT conference of heads of independent schools in Zimbabwe which was held at Gateway Primary School on Friday, Chamisa said:

“We need teachers to be educated on the issues of ICT because we can run into serious danger that the teacher will be a student whilst the student becomes the teacher.

“We must be conscious that teachers shepherd the most curious minds. Students are very curious so we do not want teachers to play second fiddle,” said Chamisa.

He said as a way to protect the children from harmful Internet material, his ministry would ensure cyber security.

“We want everyone to be connected by 2015.”
