A Bulawayo man who allegedly hacked his wife to death with a machete following a dispute over an extramarital affair before trying to commit suicide was yesterday thrown into remand prison after he was released from Mpilo Hospital.

He was admitted in hospital on Monday after the failed suicide bid.

Goodman Nyoni (34) of Mpopoma suburb was not asked to plead to a murder charge when he appeared before Western Commonage Court magistrate Richard Ramaboa.

He was remanded in custody to March 30 and was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

Prosecutor Den Ndebele told the court that on March 11, Nyoni allegedly killed his wife Miriam Takavingofa Nyoni (34) using a machete in front of their seven- year-old son.

He allegedly split her skull and chopped off her hands following an alleged dispute over an extramarital affair.

Nyoni later tried to commit suicide by hanging himself and cutting his wrists with the machete.

Neighbours discovered the grisly murder and made a report to the police. Nyoni was taken to Mpilo Hospital in a critical condition, but has since recovered.

Meanwhile, the woman’s family is reportedly demanding 45 head of cattle and $3 000 from the Nyoni family before their daughter is buried.
