A Zimbabwean national who made international headlines last year when he escaped from a court while on crutches tried his tricks again yesterday in a foiled escape from a Pretoria prison in South Africa.

Bongani Moyo is awaiting trial on armed robbery charges as he stands accused of 35 bank and other robberies with his co-accused Leon Ncube, Thabani Sibanda and Khubulani Sibanda.

Police spokesperson Sibongile Khumalo said Moyo together with three other men were spotted by a newspaper vendor trying to escape from the prison.

“They were arrested not far from prison,” Khumalo said. They had tried using their prison garb to scale the wall. Moyo’s trial was delayed two weeks ago as he was not feeling well. He had undergone an operation to remove a tooth.

Reports say the previous case records are missing. Last August, Moyo walked out of the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court while on crutches.

He had previously escaped from the Boksburg prison in March 2011.

He was re-arrested near the Beitbridge border post in Limpopo, while making his way back into South Africa from Zimbabwe.
