KWEKWE — Gokwe town secretary Tapiwa Marongwe has been summoned to appear at the Magistrates Court on Tuesday to answer to charges of corruption and alleged manipulation of tender processes.

The State alleges Marongwe corruptly altered specifications of the town’s street lighting tender documents and awarded the tender worth $62 000 to a Harare-based company Big Valley Investments without the consent of the council’s tender board.

It is the state’s case that instead of supplying council requirements, the company supplied cheap flood lights, which were fitted along the town’s roads.

The local authority had paid $62 000 for the fittings. The company allegedly admitted that they were cleared by Marongwe to supply the cheap light fittings.

Big Valley directors, councilors who seat in the procurement committee and council workers among others have also been summoned to appear in court as witnesses.

Marongwe was last month suspended on allegations of corruption but was immediately reinstated by Local government Minister, Ignatius Chombo.
