A 33-year-old man from Mpopoma suburb in Bulawayo is alleged to have fatally struck his wife with a machete during a domestic dispute on Sunday night and tried to commit suicide by hanging himself.

Goodman Nyoni was yesterday reportedly recuperating at Mpilo Central Hospital under police guard after his arrest for the alleged murder of his estranged wife, Miriam Dangaringofa (34).

Acting Bulawayo police spokesperson Precious Simango confirmed the incident.

“I can confirm that a man from Mpopoma has been arrested in connection with the murder of his wife,” she said.

“He is believed to have tried to commit suicide after the incident which occurred on Sunday at around 11:30pm.”

When NewsDay arrived at the murder scene yesterday at around 7:45am, shocked neighbours were milling on the street outside the house near Msiteli Secondary School in Mpopoma.

Some were weeping uncontrollably.

A taxi believed to have been owned by the couple was parked outside with the inscription: God is faithful.

Police were conducting investigations and the corpse was still in the house.

“It’s a grisly sight, my son,” said an elderly neighbour.

“Her hands were chopped and she was struck on the head. Her body is in a pool of blood and I do not know what had gotten into him to do such an act.”

Neighbours said it was not clear what the couple was fighting over when the alleged murder took place.

However, some said Nyoni was on separation with Dangaringofa and reportedly staying with another woman in Entumbane while his wife remained at their family house in Mpopoma with the children.

On the fateful day, Nyoni is reported to have gone to the Mpopoma house and found his wife, children and maid having gone to church.

He is reported to have unlocked the house and waited for them.

It is further alleged the family had dinner and the maid and children retired to bed.

But the maid is said to have heard noise from the bedroom where the “couple” was and woke up and tried to find out, but Nyoni is said to have told her to go back to bed saying they would resolve their dispute amicably.

It is alleged Nyoni then struck Dangaringofa with a machete on the head and on one hand almost severing it and she collapsed and died.

Nyoni is said to have phoned his brother about what had happened before trying to hang himself.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to Nyoni’s arrest and he was taken to Mpilo for treatment.
