NewsDay reporter Moses Matenga was detained by mine security yesterday after he was found in possession of a stone at Marange Resources diamond fields in Chiadzwa.

Matenga was covering a civil society facility tour of Marange Resources diamond fields.

This morning Matenga was handed over to the Zimbabwe Republic Police Criminal Investigations Department (Minerals) in Mutare, who are carrying out further investigations.

Alpha Media Holdings editor-in-chief Vincent Kahiya said: We are perfectly aware that the diamond fields are high security areas and our editors who have been there on facilitated trips understand this.

Therefore, prior to his departure to Marange, Matenga was thoroughly briefed by NewsDay Editor Constantine Chimakure about the security arrangements there and expected mode of behaviour.

We are still gathering information about how Matenga came to have the stone. Mining officials at Marange Resources have been very helpful in keeping us updated.

There will be further updates as more information becomes available.
