Mutare Central MP Innocent Gonese bounced back into the MDC-T partys national council following his unanimous election by the partys parliamentary caucus yesterday.

Gonese, who lost an initial bid to retain the post at the partys national congress in Bulawayo last year, beat Chitungwiza Senator James Makore and Mzilikazi Senator Matson Hlalo.

The MDC-T chief whip in Parliament will represent the legislators in the MDC-T national executive, the partys highest decision-making body outside congress. Commenting on Goneses election, Deputy Minister of Media, Information and Publicity Murisi Zvizwai said MPs were excited about the development.

The party will obviously derive a lot of benefit from the experience of Gonese and as MPs we are confident that we will be fully represented in the national council, Zvizwai said.

Mutasa North MP David Chimhini said MPs from Manicaland were happy about Goneses selection as he had been fighting for their rights for a long time. Goneses post as a chief whip proves that MPs appreciate his wealth of expertise, he said.

This sends a clear message to people in Manicaland that Gonese has a clear direction in the party.

Before the congress, Gonese was a victim of intra-party violence where he was accused of not originating from Manicaland province.
