The 2012 Lion Lager National Rugby League will kick off the XVs rugby season at the end of this month following the release of the league’s schedule yesterday.

According to the league’s calendar, the league gets underway on March 31 with defending champions Red Seal Old Georgians opening the defence of their title against Harare Sports Club in a repeat of last season’s final.

The same weekend will witness the return of top-flight rugby to Midlands Province when new boys Gweru Sports Club host Panthers while Old Miltonians host Old Hararians at Hartsfield.

Matabeleland Warriors, formerly known as Busters, kick-off their campaign against Airforce at Old Georgians and will be coached by Sables gaffer Brendan Dawson.

NRL president, Noddy Kanyangarara said preparations for the new season were well on course.

“The Lion Lager National Rugby League will kick off on March 31 and the fixtures have already been released. We are happy that Lion Lager have reaffirmed their commitment to local rugby and will be our title sponsors again this year,” said Kanyangarara, without revealing the value of the sponsorship package.

He added due to senior national team’s international commitments in the Africa Cup and the Tri-Nations Victoria Cup, some of the dates could change.

“Tentatively we have set all fixtures for Saturday afternoons, but as the season progresses, some fixtures might change to Friday or Saturday night games due to national team commitments,” said Kanyangarara.
