Harare mayor Muchadeyi Masunda has promised to disclose the perks of top council officials to demystify claims the citys top managers are bleeding the municipality through hefty packages.
Masunda said he would disclose the figures to the finance committee chaired by Friday Muleya. The mayor succumbed to pressure from city fathers following a heated debate over the issue at last Thursdays full council meeting.
The councillors claimed service delivery was being compromised because of huge salary demands by top officials.
The issue caused a storm last year but deputy Local Government minister Sesel Zvidzai defended the perks which he said fell within the stipulated range.
Residents are demanding to know how much officials are getting per month. Whenever we address residents they want to know that, said Muleya.
The late finance committee chairperson died without knowing how much these people were getting. If we fail to get the document, Mayor, you would have let us down. It should not be a secret to me and my committee. People say the town clerk is getting $22 000 a month, he said.
We dont know whether you Mayor and your deputy are involved. You cant have the chairman of the human resource committee not knowing how much his employee is getting.
These are public funds from residents and they need to know what is going on. We have waited since 2008 and we dont know anything up to now. We demand to know how much these people are getting, he said.

Councillor Wellington Chikombo weighed in saying: It has to do with public funds and we want to know how much they are getting. The only way to deal with such claims is to come out in the open.
Another councillor said the public knows the salary of the President and argued why that of a town clerk was not being made public.
We now demand the executive payroll of these people. They are getting more than what (US President Barack) Obama is getting and that is why Local Government minister (Ignatius) Chombo has the opportunity to fire us, said another councillor.
