Bulawayo City Council has acquired a vehicle tracking system to curb misuse of its vehicles.
According to the latest council minutes, the move was prompted by reports of rampant abuse of the local authority’s vehicles especially by employees in the water and engineering departments.
Debating the issue at the last council meeting, Ward 14 councillor, Phineas Ndlovu said follow-up procedures should be introduced for a disconnection system as some council vehicles were being misused.
“Staff members defended each other in this regard and some of the vehicles were observed parked at residential properties during working hours,” he said.
Councillor Edward Ndlovu said at times the follow-up teams connived with the disconnection team to engage in misconduct.
BCC director of engineering services Simela Dube confirmed the abuse of council property.
“The abuse of council vehicles is a challenge and efforts are being made to address this problem,” he said.
“The acquisition of a vehicle tracking system has since been sought and a deposit had since been paid to the supplier and installations would commence soon.”
