Air Zimbabwe on Monday failed to resume domestic flights after its pilots reportedly refused to enter the cockpit before payment of their outstanding salaries.

The airline suspended its domestic flights last month after its only reliable aircraft, a Boeing 737, developed a mechanical fault.

Air Zimbabwe acting chief executive officer Innocent Mavhunga confirmed the boycott.

“Regrettably we failed to commence the flights today (Monday) due to non-payment of staff and we are engaging them on that,” Mavhunga said.

The airline is saddled with an estimated debt of $149 million, with $30 million owed to foreign creditors.

Transport and Communications minister Nicholas Goche recently admitted the airline had been operating on a deficit since 1994.

This, he said, had resulted in frequent strikes, grounding of operations, non-replacement of equipment, huge debts, suspension from the International Air Transport Association, lease withdrawals and contract cancellations, among other problems.
