Unicorns won the inaugural Unicorns Invitational Basketball tournament in Gweru on Saturday after they beat Varsity Leopards 34-31 in the mens final. The games were played at Chaplin and Regina Mundi High schools.

Unicorns continued with their impressive form which has seen them topple Bulawayo side Highlanders from the top of the Southern Region Basketball League, when they beat ZB Titans 78-39 at Bulawayo Club for the Disabled. In the semi-final they beat Jewels Basketball Club from Harare 45-31 to book a slot in the finals. In another semi-final in the mens category, the game pitting Highlanders and Varsity Leopards was stopped due to bad light while Highlanders were leading the Harare side 32-13. Varsity Leopards beat Lakers (Bulawayo) 20-8 to win the final in the womens section. Lakers qualified for the final after they beat Unicorns 27-8 while Varsity Leopards thumped Steelers 37-13 in the semi-finals.

The winners of the tournament received $ 150 each. Varsity Leopards Reginah Chisale was named the best player in the womens category while Simba Chiromo of Unicorns was voted as the most valuable player in the mens section.
