The Parks and Wildlife Management Authority has dismissed rumours that a pride of 12 lions had escaped from Lion and Cheetah Park and was roaming the area near Norton, some 38km west of Harare.

Parks spokesperson Caroline Washaya-Moyo, who visited the recreational park yesterday, said according to records none of the lions were missing. The owner of the leisure park, only referred to as Anthony, also discounted the rumours, saying none of the 43 lions had escaped.

Anthony said: All our lions are counted twice a day, housed in electric fences and enclosed within a perimeter fence. We are constantly in close interaction with our animals and it is impossible for any of them to escape without our knowledge.

He added they were working closely with the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority to clear this matter.
