Basketball teams have been invited to participate in the inaugural Unicorns Invitational Basketball Tournament in Gweru on Saturday.

The games will be played at Chaplin and Regina Mundi High schools.

Organiser Walter Mabhena yesterday confirmed to NewsDay Sport the tournament was on.

We are having our inaugural Unicorns Invitational Basketball Tournament this Saturday. The main point of establishing the Southern Region was because we felt the level of basketball was going down. We believe by having the league and such tournaments, standards can rise again, he said.

Teams expected to take part in the mens section are hosts Unicorns, Varsity Leopards, Jewels Basketball Club (JBC) and Gentlemens Association, all from Harare.

The teams will be joined by Midlands State University (MSU), fellow Midlands side Steelers, Highlanders, Abundant Life Christian Centre (ALLC), Kings, Giants, Oiler and 6ers, all from Bulawayo.

The womens section will feature hosts Unicorns, Steelers, JBC, Varsity Leopards, MSU, Ladies Association and Lakers from Bulawayo.

Mabhena, a Unicorns player, is their trump card alongside Tatenda Tswatswatswa. I am looking forward to a runaround against other teams. We are definitely hoping to win the tournament, he said.

Unicorns have been impressive in the Southern Region Basketball League after toppling Highlanders at the top of the Southern Region Basketball League log table last Saturday.

Highlanders will seek inspiration from Michaela Zvoushe, Stewart Woods, Tawanda Mudzudza, and Lionel Smith.

Kings will look up to players like Garth Hussey, Liberty Nyathi and Olfie Dollie.

Honest Nguruve, Moses Tigere and Crayton Moyo rate among key players for ALCC.

Excelling teams will get trophies, shields, medals and undisclosed amounts of money from Swaziland-based lecturer Naboth Pfebeni.
