The MDC has congratulated President Robert Mugabe for turning 88 today but reminded him thousands of Zimbabweans had failed to live their lives to the full due to his autocratic rule.
“While the MDC wishes Robert Mugabe a happy birthday, we pray that may the Lord open his eyes so that he may see his political irrelevance and reveal to him the goodness of retirement as the nation has already lost patience on his 32 years of misrule,” said MDC spokesperson Kurauone Chihwayi in a statement yesterday.
As per tradition, Mugabe will on Saturday be treated to a lavish celebration through the Soviet-style 21 February Movement in Chipinge.
The celebrations are expected to gobble millions of dollars.
“We wish to remind Robert Mugabe that there are thousands of other sons and daughters of this country who could have been 88 this year but were massacred by the Gukurahundi army that he commandeered, there are also some that have lost their lives in the recent incidents of political violence that are perpetrated by his supporters,” the party said.
The Welshman Ncube-led party also accused Mugabe of having misplaced priorities shown by the lavish parties.
“We are concerned as a party that once again he continues to prove that the lavish lifestyles and parties are a preserve of those that are in power and their kith and kin whilst the majority of Zimbabweans rot in poverty.”
Meanwhile, Zanu PF national spokesperson Rugare Gumbo said preparations for the weekend celebrations were going on well.
“The preparations are well on course and we hope the bash will be big this year,” he said.
“The way the Mutare people have organised the event looks fantastic, the quality of the presentation and ideas are brilliant.”
Zimbabweans in the Diaspora are planning protests to mark Mugabe’s birthday.
