Ajax set club record

Ajax Cape Towns Absa Premiership victory over Maritzburg United on Sunday created a club record their fifth league victory in a row.

The Urban Warriors won their final three matches of 2011, beating Bloemfontein Celtic (2-0, home), Lamontville Golden Arrows (1-0, away) and Black Leopards (4-3, home), before collecting wins in their opening two games of 2012, home to Platinum Stars (3-2) and away at Maritzburg United (2-0).

After being alerted to the fact by, Ajax trawled through their records and confirmed that history had been made in the match against the Team of Choice.

Following a difficult start to the season for rookie coach Maarten Stekelenburg, in which the club went six games without a win prior to this successful run, they have now bounced back into title contention.

The side are in fourth, five points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns with 13 games left in the season.

The PSL record for most wins in a row is nine achieved by BidVest Wits in the 2002/03 season, but Ajax will have to do remarkably well to beat that.

They have a Cape Derby against Santos on Saturday, before they travel away to Kaizer Chiefs and then host Mamelodi Sundowns in their next three League matches.

If they manage to win all three of those then they will be among the favourites to lift the Absa Premiership crown at the end of the season.
