The Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) has introduced a Bornwell Chakaodza Annual World Press Freedom Day Memorial Lecture series in honour of the late veteran Zimbabwean journalist who died two weeks ago.

In a statement, the VMCZ said the lecture series would be launched on May 3 to coincide with commemorations of the World Press Freedom Day.

Chakaodza succumbed to bowel cancer which he had battled since 2008.

“We (the VMCZ board) are pleased to announce the launch of the Bornwell Chakaodza Annual World Press Freedom Day Memorial Lecture to be held on May 3 2012.”

At the time of his death Chakaodza was working as a private media consultant and vice-chairperson of the VMCZ board. He had previously worked for various publications including The Standard and The Herald newspapers.

“The lecture is in memory of sterling contribution to the journalism profession of the late VMCZ deputy chairperson and respected senior journalist BC (Bornwell Chakaodza) who passed away on 1 February 2012.

Chakaodza was a respected and committed journalist whose career spanned over three decades in the media profession. His dedication to media professionalism and media self-regulation is not only iconic but also deserving of annual recognition and remembrance,” said VMCZ.
