A Zaoga FIF church pastor in Chinhoyi Tyson Phiri (80) confirmed the old adage that says age is nothing, but a number when he wrestled and overpowered a suspected armed intruder who had broken into his daughter’s house in the dead of night last week.

It is alleged on February 8 at 8:10pm at Hunyani Section, the unidentified suspect who is still at large went to the complainant Charity Wadyandiyani’s house and knocked on the door.

When Wadyandiyani opened the door, the suspect immediately produced a CZ pistol and pointed it at her, forcing her to retreat into the house while screaming for help.

The suspect followed her inside, but was repulsed by Wadyandiyani’s father Phiri, who reacted quickly to save his daughter.

It is alleged while outside the house the accused fired two shots with one of the bullets shattering a window in the dining room.

The octogenarian plucked up courage and confronted the attacker, forcing him to flee into darkness. During the confrontation, the octogenarian church leader sustained minor bruises.

Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara said officers at Chemagamba Police Station attended the scene and recovered two spent cartridges and one live bullet.

Mabgweazara said police had since launched a manhunt for the suspect, but cautioned the public on the risk of confronting armed criminals.

“We discourage members of the public from confronting armed people as it is dangerous. If possible, it is very importantfor people to have police (contact) numbers easily available for quick reaction,” said Mabgweazara.
