Highlanders suffered their second defeat in the Southern Region Basketball League as they fell 62-54 to Giants in a match they dominated in the first and second quarters at Bulawayo Club for the Disabled on Friday.

It was the league pacesetters’ second loss in 15 matches after they were handed their first defeat by another Bulawayo side, Kings.

The experience of Emmanuel Mukandi was all Giants needed to ride over Highlanders as he went on a rampage in the third and final quarter, scoring 22 points in the match.

Michael Zvoushe, one of the top scorers in the league, was not at his best on Friday and got 11 points for Highlanders.

Giants are on position five on the log table, five points behind Highlanders. Despite the loss, Highlanders remained at the top of the log standings with 28 points, at par with Unicorns, who cruised 89-44 past Stars on Saturday.

Stars, placed on position eight on the log standings in the 11-team league, lost two matches at the weekend as they were also beaten 53-44 by ALCC on Friday.

ALCC are perched on position three, two points behind Highlanders and Unicorns with the same number of games.

In another encounter played on Friday, Oilers thumped ZB Titans 64-29 while Midlands State University (MSU) arrived late for their game against Kings and it was postponed to next weekend.

After losing to Oilers on Friday, ZB Titans got 20 points on a silver platter on Saturday as Steelers of Kwekwe failed to turn up for their match.

Giants maintained pole position in the women’s section after beating MSU 45-30 while second-placed Lakers were beaten 53-32 by Highlanders.
