Chitungwiza town clerk, Godfrey Tanyanyiwa, was arrested yesterday by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and was charged with criminal abuse of office, following his alleged misappropriation of council funds meant for employees salaries, NewsDay can reveal.

An official with the commission confirmed yesterday Tanyanyiwa had been picked up by the ACC investigators although it could not be ascertained where he was being held.

We picked him up yesterday following allegations of criminal abuse of office.

He will appear before the courts soon, said the source.

The official said Tanyanyiwa was most likely to appear in court on Monday.

Tanyanyiwa is reported to have misappropriated funds raised by the municipality through a promotion in which residents who settled half their outstanding bills had the remaining half slashed off.

Sources at the municipality said out of the over $180 000 raised through the promotion, only $30 000 could be accounted for, leading to the town clerks suspension and subsequent arrest.

The misappropriation of the funds saw the municipality struggling to pay its employees their November and December 2011 salaries. The employees went on strike just before the Christmas holiday, demanding payment of their outstanding salaries.

At the time, Chitungwiza Mayor, Philemon Chipiyo, confirmed to NewsDay Tanyanyiwa went on forced leave to pave way for investigations meant to establish what happened to the money raked in during the council promotion.
