Bulawayo will be using athletes from schools to represent the province in the inter-provincial cross-country championships set for Allan Lowry Golf Course in Redcliff tomorrow.

By yesterday, the Bulawayo Athletic Board appeared not to have identified athletes that will take part in the competition.

But board chairman Emmanuel Mpofu said the province would be sending more than 10 athletes to Redcliff.

Mpofu said six athletes had already confirmed their participation, but he could not give names, saying the board had to seek clearance from their schools and their parents first.

“We are going to send athletes to Kwekwe. We will be sending more than 10 athletes and six have already confirmed, but I cannot give you the names of the athletes at the moment,” Mpofu said.

Schools in the city have already taken part in inter-schools cross-country competition. The inter-zonal competition will be held on March 14 and 15 to coincide with the track and field events.

Mpofu was not even certain when the Bulawayo team would be leaving for Midlands. “We will be leaving tomorrow afternoon (today) or on Saturday morning,” Mpofu said.

The inter-provincial cross-country competition will be used to select a team that will represent the country at the Southern Region Cross-Country Championships in Mauritius, on March 3.

Athletes excelling there will then be part of the Zimbabwe team that will participate in the second African Cross-Country Championships set for Cape Town, South Africa, on March 18.
