A Mutare man, who was part of a gang that allegedly kidnapped an unsuspecting woman and forced her to chew condoms before raping her, was arrested this week.

The alleged rape happened in October last year but the perpetrators had been on the run since that time. The court heard that the victim, whose age was not disclosed, was walking alone in Dangamvura suburb at around 8pm when she met the gang.

The strangers are said to have intercepted her and she tried to run away.

The gang gave chase and caught up with her before she could get refuge at a nearby house.

The assailants allegedly force-marched her to Nyakauru River on the outskirts of the suburb. They are said to have threatened her with death.

One of the accused, Jonah Nhenderere (23), reportedly forced the woman to chew unused condoms before dipping her into raw sewage. After some time the gang tore her clothes before raping her several times.

Nhenderere was brought before the courts yesterday for initial remand where he was remanded in custody to February 21 by magistrate Noah Gwatidzo.

The State refused bail saying Nhenderere was a flight risk and is facing a serious charge.

He was advised to apply for bail at the High Court. Truman Joma prosecuted.
