Binga Senator Hebert Madolo Sinampande was last Friday sentenced to 140 days imprisonment or alternatively pay $950 fine after his car was involved in an accident that killed three passengers.

Sinampande’s Isuzu KB300 truck crashed into a tree before landing on its roof at the 164km peg along the Harare – Bulawayo Road in February last year killing Moses Mandova, Daniel Jera and another unidentified passenger on the spot.

Eight others were seriously injured.

Sinampande faced three counts of culpable homicide, failing to report a fatal accident to the police and driving without a valid driver’s licence.

The State, led by Reginals Chavora told, the court the senator was driving from Bulawayo heading towards Kadoma with 11 passengers on board.

He was reportedly speeding and failed to control the vehicle when its left tyre burst. The car veered off the road and crashed into a tree before landing on its roof, killing the three passengers.

The court heard that following the fatal accident, Sinamapande did not report to the police.

Magistrate Takawira Mugabe sentenced him to $800 or 90 days in jail, $50 or 20 days and $100 or 30 days imprisonment for counts one, two and three respectively.

Sinampande was given until February 28 to deposit the fine with the clerk of court or face jail.
