The State has lined up 11 witnesses to testify in the trial of three Mthwakazi Liberation Front (MLF) leaders facing treason charges.

The trial opens at the Bulawayo High Court today. The three — MLF secretary-general Paul Siwela, Charles Thomas (secretary for security) and former party member John Gazi – were indicted to the High Court three weeks ago.

Bulawayo police commander (Law and Order Section) Superintendent Andrew Mupungu is among those set to testify in the high-profile case.

Siwela and Thomas are out of custody on $2 000 bail each while Gazi is serving a jail term for a separate case involving fraud.

The MLF leaders have been on remand for the past 12 months awaiting trial following their arrest for allegedly attempting to topple the government, a charge they have since denied.

Sindiso Mazibisa is representing the three.
