Headman Patrick Chiadzwa of Marange, Manicaland, died in a road accident on Saturday following a head-on collision with a bus belonging to one of the few companies mining diamonds in the area.
Chiadzwa (48) was driving alone on the fateful day when he reportedly failed to give way to an oncoming Anjin Investments Mining Company bus on a narrow bridge along Hotsprings-Chiadzwa road in Marange at around 8am.
He suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead on admission at Mutambara Hospital in Chimanimani.
Police confirmed the headman’s death and advised road users to obey road regulations.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Enock Chishiri said Chiadzwa was driving his Nissan Hardbody vehicle alone when he approached Odzi Bridge.
He failed to give way to the bus already crossing the narrow bridge, resulting in the head-on collision.
“The bridge has a provision of only one car at a time and the Anjin bus was already crossing the bridge when the deceased tried to cross as well. Headman Chiadzwa failed to give way to an oncoming mining bus and that resulted in a head-on collision,” said Chishiri.
Chiadzwa sustained a deep cut on the forehead and he bled profusely through the nose, the spokesperson said.
