Police in Rusape are hunting for a taxi driver who knocked down and seriously injured a 52-year-old visually impaired pedestrian and fled the scene on Tuesday.

Pardon Marume is on the run after he allegedly hit the elderly pedestrian, who sustained a fractured left leg and a deep cut on the forehead, before speeding away.

Police said they had gathered information on his whereabouts and were optimistic of arresting him soon.

Allegations are that on January 31 near Vengere bus terminus, Marume was driving a Spacio car from Rusape town centre to Vengere suburb.

He knocked down Simon Pomerai near Vengere bus terminus and fled from the scene.

Acting Manicaland police spokesperson Sergeant Muzondiwa Clean said a passing motorist rushed to the scene and took Pomerai to Rusape General Hospital where he is receiving treatment.

However, police tracked the taxi and found it parked behind Vengere Stadium, but the whereabouts of the driver were unknown.

We urge all road users to be cautious on the road to avoid unnecessary accidents.

In case of an accident people should not flee because the law will catch up with them, Clean said.
