The national women’s Under-20 team are set to play their South African counterparts in an international friendly in Johannesburg on Sunday as preparations for the Under-20 Women African Championships qualifiers.

The Young Mighty Warriors team have been paired against neighbours Mozambique in the first round. The first leg is set for Harare in a fortnight and Zimbabwe will travel to Maputo for the reverse fixture two weeks later.

In the event the Young Mighty Warriors clears the Mozambique hurdle, they face continental giants Nigeria in the second round.

The Mighty Warriors team will also face Nigeria in the first round of the Caf African Women’s Championships.

Coach Langton Giwa on Monday announced a strong 18-member squad for the qualifier which included four regular players from the senior women squad.

Eunice Chibanda, Rhodah Jongoti, Portia Mukucha and Elizabeth Chaparangana will provide experience to the squad while Charity Karuru, sister to Warriors star Ovidy, has also been included.

The exciting Karuru was voted Player of the Tournament at the inaugural Copa Coca-Cola Under-20 Girls’ Soccer Tournament last year.

The team was expected to fly out this morning.
