Highlanders secretary Andrew Tapela, who is seeking another term during elections set for Sunday at the team’s clubhouse, believes he has done well for the club.

The team has been mired in financial woes.

Tapela and chairman Themba Ndlela are hoping to retain their posts in the coming elections.

“Basically, I am proud to have been part of the executive that brought stability taking into consideration the financial position of the club. Since we took over in 2009, we managed to secure sponsorship for the club. Talk about BancABC, Buscod, Karcher, Bakers Inn and now we have Savanna back,” Tapela said.

He added: “The glory and pride of the club should be synonymous with the finances of the club. Log position depends on the financial strength of the club. But I can tell you one thing; we managed to raise a team even in difficult circumstances.

“We could not get quality players because we did not have money. Any person in the world can sign any player as long as there is money. If you do not have money, you will obviously get mediocre players.

“But the focus now is to get more sponsors to complement the ones that we have at the moment and attract quality players. My manifesto is derived from the club’s strategic plan. Highlanders has a strategic plan, which was adopted by the executive, the board and members. Recently I have managed to sign three to five-year contracts with players and that is a great reservoir that we have built. There is no man who can manage to build a team with little resources like we have.”
