An elderly man died on the spot when he was struck by a South African-registered vehicle in a hit-and-run incident along Robert Mugabe Way in Bulawayo’s North End suburb on Sunday.

National police traffic spokesperson Inspector Tigere Chigome yesterday said the accident occurred at 8.40pm and the driver of the vehicle later surrendered himself at Hillside Police Station.

“The South African-registered Toyota Corrolla vehicle hit a cyclist who was crossing the road next to Comoil (garage) in North End.

“The cyclist sustained multiple body injuries and died on the spot,” Chigome said.

“The driver did not stop at the accident scene but later surrendered himself at Hillside Police Station. We would like to urge motorists never to flee an accident scene, but instead phone the police and ambulance who would immediately attend the scene so that lives are saved.

“If they escape the accident scene, the long arm of the law will still catch up with them.”

Chigome also warned the public against meting mob justice against drivers after accidents saying: “It is one of the reasons why motorists flee accident scenes in fear of being assaulted.

“We appeal to members of the public to allow the police to conduct their investigations and get to the bottom of the matter.”
